FOODCHAIN a new exhibition of photography and film by Nick May showing at Light House. Since 2006 Nick May has been making a photographic study of agriculture and food production in South Lincolnshire and the Fenlands. This is one of the most productive and intensively farmed agricultural regions of Europe and is now a major centre of the UK food industry. This year, thanks to support from the Arts Council, the ongoing work has been extended to include video. The video work made by Nick May and Ben Holland was created specifically for the Light House show and will play alongside the photography. Photographer Nick May says ‘Our dependence on cheap food is subsidised by countless low paid farm and factory workers – in the UK as well as the world. The extraordinary pressure exerted by the large corporations and supermarkets reverberate throughout the food chain and we have attempted to reveal this with a combination of photography and video. ‘Many of the major producers in South Lincolnshire have allowed us access to their operations and we have also followed the stories of individual workers, gangmasters and executives to present a broad spectrum of experience for exhibition.’
