To mark Portsmouth Guildhall’s 125th Anniversary and ongoing partnership with the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) at the University of Portsmouth, CCI students were invited to submit a proposal to showcase new creative work as part of our ongoing exhibition programme to enrich the visual and cultural experience of visitors to the Guildhall.

Any student or a small group of collaborating students, studying any subject in the CCI Faculty could submit a proposal responding to the theme: ‘the relationship between Eldon Building and the Portsmouth Guildhall’. The final outcome had to be in 2D and the selected student was awarded £250 towards materials and display.

The selection panel looked for creative excellence, originality in response to the theme and clear method of display.  The judges were Simon Brookes (Associate Dean of Students), Andy Grays (CEO of Portsmouth Cultural Trust), Ann Barnes (Curator, Portsmouth Cultural Trust) and Denise Callender (CCI Faculty Promotions Manager). The selected student was Ailsa Brims, an MA Fine Art student at the School of Art and Design.

For this project, the physical connection of paved paths and roads between the buildings created a canvas for Ailsa to pause, settle her mind and contemplate her surroundings.  Figures appear as faceless ethereal shadows or reflections, allowing the viewer to glimpse another world where details can often be overlooked in the journey between the buildings.
