Painting with Beeswax and pigments is as old as the Egyptians, who used it to decorate their Pharaohs’ sarcophagi. Dorset Artists Anne Berendt and Lyn Kirkland met through their shared passion for painting with this medium known as Encaustic Wax. Essentially, the wax is mixed with a resin which in turn is mixed with coloured pigments. The wax is applied to a painting surface in a molten state and ‘fused’ in layers using a heat gun or gas burner.
Both Anne and Lyn have developed their own unique styles. Producing work that is bursting with colour, texture and light. The versatility of the wax means that it can also be used to embed images, collage items & textiles. It has also been developed to be used without heat, in the form of ‘cold wax’.
In the UK, when Art enthusiasts hear the phrase ‘encaustic wax’, they assume it is the more popular method using a small iron, wax blocks and card. The method of application Anne and Lyn prefer to use, is relatively unknown in this Country, which makes this Exhibition a must to visit!
