Spike Print Studio, Bristol, is hosting a major exhibition of artist Pamela Scott Wilkie’s work in October 2010. The exhibition will focus on the juxtaposition of two similar yet different series of prints. Both Journey (1972), and Horizons (2008), are Scott Wilkie’s personal response to the unfolding of experience while travelling. Each image contributing to the narrative of both sets of prints is inspired by a particular chance encounter or impression along the way. An underlying and integral dimension to these encounters is the sense of heightened awareness that enables the artist to express archetypal responses. Journey is based on the experience of driving overland to Pakistan, through Europe, Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan. The Horizons prints are reflective of Scott Wilkie’s more recent travel experiences, but their interconnectedness is not linear but rather time based. It is now possible to hop around the globe from one culture to another with no linear continuity. As well as the two sets of prints there will be photographic documentation and sketches displayed to show how the artist retained commitment and respect for the lands she accessed overland. This same consideration is given to the destinations reached with incredible speed, but where we almost have no sense of the distance travelled.
