Mimi paints drawings and draws paintings and uses lots of colour on top of her paintidrawings. But the using of lots of colour is not a way of grabbing the viewers’ attention. Nor is it a gimmick or a reaction to the grey cloud of the current economic climate. You might marvel at the perfect symmetry of hundreds of hand drawn ant paths. You may think that the images of a cow, or a dog, some woodland logs or a landscape with a magic castle are “cute”. But these images are not meant to be cute–they are the sinister manifestations of Mimi’s recurrent thought patterns…. Mimi Leung was born in 1982 and studied at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art. Her work has featured in Dazed & Confused, Time Out HK, Milk HK, and The Guardian. She was named in the Lürzer Archive’s “200 Best Illustrators Worldwide” as well as taking part in the Vice “Creative 30 Show” and Heavy Pencil at the ICA. Mimi currently lives and works in London and Hong Kong.
