Holding the Fort is an exhibition of work by six East Sussex-based contemporary artists led and curated by Rachel Cohen.
Rachel Cohen made a solo exhibition, Vessels at Newhaven Fort in 2013 and was inspired to return – this time inviting other artists to join her. She has chosen five artists who work with sculpture, installation, drawing and performance: Judith Alder, Terrence Brett, Helen Goodwin, Ram Samocha and Zoe Toolan.
Each artist will make site-specific installations in response to this extraordinary, atmospheric 19th Century Fort. The works will be distributed around the site in many locations inviting visitors to explore and discover the Fort itself as well as the artworks.
Some of the works will be made in situ during performances on Sunday 28 July between 3pm and 5pm, and some will change over time or be reworked or relocated during the exhibition’s run.
There will be free, participatory live events on Saturday August 24th by Rachel Cohen and Zoe Toolan as part of Newhaven festival. https://www.newhavenfestival.co.uk/ Details will be posted soon on Newhaven Fort and Newhaven Festival websites and on Rachel and Zoe’s web pages.
