Following her award of the Attenborough Prize 2007, Choterina Freer will be showing work spanning the past two years of her practice. Composed of decorative materials such as sequins, diamanté stones and satin flowers, her work explores and expands upon contemporary romantic narratives. Choterina acquires preconceived conceptions of romance from magazines and books, spinning their stories into the realm of the absurd and fantastical. The materials employed create a maximalist veneer of carnivalesque proportions, yet beneath the façade of artifice lie considerations on the role of, and our need for, desire. Tales include a woman's mermaid fantasy, a dream of a fortune teller's prediction, a love affair in the Swiss Alps and a girl who keeps a baby fly for a pet, all infused with a party atmosphere under pink disco lights. Choterina's continuing development of an art practice that embraces the viewer will proceed, as the first sixty guests will receive the good luck gift of two paper magpies in a cage.
