SPECIAL EVENT: Thurs 3 April, 2 – 5pm. Seminar with Jonathan Jones, Art critic of the Guardian and Observer newspapers and Dr Patrick Eyres, Trustee of Little Sparta and editor of New Arcadians'. No booking necessary, admission is free. Ian Hamilton Finlay was a poet, artist and gardener. Above all he combined all these into the role of philosopher and commentator on the contemporary condition. The most significant area of his work is that of words – words written or inscribed on objects as diverse as cards, books, and prints, words inscribed on stone or wood sculpture, in room installations and outside in the public or civic space. Throughout his life he had had a very productive relationship with Southampton Art Gallery, which acquired a significant amount of his working in all its forms. This collecting was later supplemented by bequests, particularly from Dr. David Brown, for many years Assistant Keeper of the Modern Collection at the Tate Gallery and a friend and supporter of Finlay. This exhibition takes the opportunity to show once more the selection of work curated by Dr. Patrick Eyers in 1982 and toured by Southampton Art Gallery to support Hamilton Finlay during his disputes about the meaning of culture and creativity with the Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Arts Council.
