Looking to start a new series of paintings I began to think about a suitable theme. I thought the work should be based on day to day experiences and, actually, what I do most days is go for a walk with the dog, so I began to draw little sketches of what we saw on the walks, or what happened when we were out walking. Whilst tramping through the countryside my mind was often elsewhere, pondering some other subject, so I started to incorporate this internal scenery into the sketches. Back in the studio I'd work up the sketches into small, semi-figurative studies which I then over-painted, obscuring the image and leaving only small pockets of the original showing through, thus rendering the work more or less abstract. I then produced the final works from the studies, sometimes cropping down to an area of particular interest.
