Daoism is the philosophy of Dao, the eternal Way of nature. Daoists encourage a deep respect for the natural world and its cycles of growth and destruction. An ‘immortal’ is someone who lives in harmony with the Way, whether a sage, a poet, or even a tree.
The body of work was inspired by an encounter with Daoist poetry. Armed with a stick of charcoal, the artist felt moved to create visual interpretations of some of these profound ancient verses. Poets referenced in the exhibition include Laozi, Hanshan, and Bai Juyi.
Originally from South Africa, Janice Deary now works in Fife, Scotland. After some time in the academic world, as a student and teacher of philosophy, Janice completed her MFA in 2020. Since then, she has exhibited her work in Scotland and abroad.
