In April this year Blue Monkey artist member Nikki Davidson-Bowman attended a symposium “(M)otherhood” at Tate St Ives, inspired by the Barbara Hepworth exhibition ’Art & Life’ that was there before coming to Towner. Using Hepworth as her muse and inspirations from the symposium, Nikki will take us on a subjective meander through holes, threads, life & art from her viewpoint as an artist mother and how it may or may not impact your practice.
This talk will look at a narrative of primarily female artists, in relation to motherhood, childlessness (not by choice and infertility) as well as experiences of grief – and therefore there may be triggers for some although these subjects will be considered with sensitivity.
Whilst an interest in Hepworth and seeing the Hepworth Art & Life exhibition on the top floor at Towner is not a prerequisite for the talk, there is an opportunity for BMN attendees to see the exhibition before the talk if you have not had the opportunity to visit already. BMN attendees need to visit the front desk on arrival and state that they are there to come along to the BMN event and they will be given access to the exhibition as part of their BMN membership or if a non-BMN member you will need to pay £5 to BMN for attending the event. The talk and discussion will take place in Studio 3 on the middle floor (near the toilets). Please allow time to check in with Kath before the event starts. As a result of the Towner offering late-night openings on Thursdays at the moment, the format for the evening will be:
5.00 – 6.30 pm See the Hepworth Art & Life under your own steam – optional.
6.00 – 6.30 pm Check in/visitors pay and networking in studio 3
6.30 – 7.30pm “In the footsteps of Babs” – talk & time for discussion.
The Towner closes at 8.00 pm. The downstairs café will be open for refreshments.
Nikki is a conceptual artist working with found things – vintage photographs, ephemera, words, and natural finds from therapeutic walking – to explore female stories of resilience.
