Since the beginning of July artists Martin Hamblen, Teresa and Dominique Hodgson-Holt and Leo Fitzmaurice have been creating new artworks in three empty shops in Preston’s St. John’s shopping centre, as part of the In Certain Places artist-in-residence scheme, In The Shops Now! In The Shops Now! has been developed in partnership with the St John’s Centre to explore creative uses for empty shops and offer shoppers the chance to experience the creation of new artworks, chat to the artists and get involved in unusual activities in a familiar environment. During the residency Martin Hamblen has been constructing a ‘tunnel’ which runs through the middle of his shop; Leo Fitzmaurice has transformed a shop front; and Teresa and Dominique Hodgson-Holt have created an alternative shop, where customers can take part in a unique performance by temporarily exchanging their clothes for red outfits. The completed artworks will be on display in units 15, 33 and 59 of the St John’s Centre from 30th July – 26th August and the exhibition will be launched with an event on Thursday 30th July, 12.30 – 1.30 pm at the St John’s Centre. This is open to all and is a chance to talk to the artists about their experiences of working in the shopping centre.
