Introducing… The Binnie Sisters. Christine and Jennifer Binnie, potter, painter and performance artists, returned to their Sussex roots last April to participate in the Eastbourne Festival, with an installation at the Wheatsheaf pub in Willingdon. They have exhibited widely over the last 30 years and have recently started to work on projects together as ‘The Binnie Sisters’. As well as talking about their individual work as potter and painter, they will be talking to us about their practice as founding members of the Neo Naturist Cabaret in the early 1980s. They performed in London clubs and galleries alongside Grayson Perry, Cerith Wyn Evans and Michael Clark in the cultural context of post punk and the advent of Thatcherism. “Simultaneously embracing nature and culture, ancient rite and modern ritual, the Binnies have never compromised their vision or fretted about art world fashionability with the result that they now seem more fresh and relevant than ever” Louisa Buck, The Art Newspaper 2012 There will be time for drinks and chat at Towner after the Binnie Sisters’ talk, and Towner’s exhibition, Collective Observations: Folklore and Photography will open between 5.30 and 6.30pm for visitors to the Blue Monkey event. FREE to Blue Monkey Network members; £5 non-members.
