During 2016-17 three properties in Seaside Road & Seaside, Eastbourne have been undergoing a transformation to form the Devonshire Collective of creative spaces (DC1, DC2, DC3), for the benefit of artists and community members. DC1 at 67-69 Seaside Rd houses a contemporary café and gallery with space available for events, workshops, seminars and training, DC2 at 137-139 Seaside Rd houses artists’ studios and makerspaces, and DC3 at 1-5 Seaside houses the Workshop, a multi-purpose space for making, building and classes.

This month we’ve arranged an opportunity for artists to visit the new Devonshire Collective venues and meet the people who are running this exciting new resource for artists. We’ll be meeting Devonshire Collective Programme Manager, Amy Solis and Administrator, Rory Prout who will take us on a tour of the venues with a chance to view the workshop facilities, studio spaces and gallery.

The Print Room at DC2 offers facilities for relief and intaglio printing, including mono-print. It will serve as a teaching facility to enable beginners and experienced practitioners to further their understanding of printmaking. The facility will also be available for artists to produce limited editions. The Print Room will offer classes to small groups, as well as individuals on a one-to-one basis and will be run by artist Jan Turner. Jan was trained at St Martins School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He has been teaching art and printmaking for over 20 years.

Eastbourne Studio Pottery will be running a contemporary creative space for ceramics as a craft and art form at DC2, providing enjoyable and inspirational courses and expert guidance at all levels. With a variety of short and longer courses focusing on a range of techniques including throwing, sculpture, slab and coil construction, decoration and more, the resource will be responsive to and shaped by the users. Fee paying courses and space/kiln hire will be complemented by community grant aided and subsidised courses developed with local community partners.

Devonshire Collective’s Amy Solis will tell us more about ways in which artists can access the facilities and will be available to answer your questions. We’ll also take a look at the second exhibition in the DC1 Gallery – Greenhouse, curated by Rory Prout.

The DC1 coffee shop will be open for refreshments.
