The genii cucullati are fascinating hooded spirits that have been protecting the Mother Goddesses (throughout Europe) for millennia. This example is a limestone votive relief found in Cirencester 1892. They may well be guardians of the local deity ‘Cuda’.
My work in the Invoking Absence exhibition reflects on how humans may take up the ‘cloak’ to be guardians of the more-than-human world. I refer to the more recent textile heritage of the Stroud Valleys as it overlays and becomes woven into ancient spiritual entanglements.
