A video installation and performance that uses collaboration across different art forms to question notions of cultural identity and origin. Jhaptaal is the name of a ten beat repeating rhythm structure from Indian classical music. In this new work, Patel works with Louise Clements (Curator/Artist/Kathak dancer) and Jason Singh (DJ/Beatboxer/Musician) to explore the parameters of this musical structure. In both the video installation and the live performances traditional Indian Kathak dance interacts with vocal and physical percussion with origins ranging from Indian classical to hip-hop. These British born artists are interested in what it means to have this traditional Indian rhythm structure as a parameter for their performance interactions with one another.
