Artist-in-Residence at Digital Artist Residency
Zombie Media Residency
== 14th December – 17th January 2015 ==

Kuai Shen is an audiovisual naturalist and ant lover. His audiovisual installations reflect on the interspecies relationship between ants and humans as a metaphor for a post-human ecology whose future lies in the mutualism between species and the potential symbiosis between artefacts and organisms. His current research focuses on ant mimicry in the post-biologic technology of humans based on emergence, resiliency and imitation.
The digital residencies provide an online space for artists to develop works, ideas and practices. Six residencies will take place online between October – January, with each selected artist having one month to complete a proposed project along the theme of: Media Archaeology/ Zombie Media. Media archaeologists have challenged the rejection of history by modern media culture and theory alike by pointing out unnoticed continuities and ruptures.
During his residency, Kuai Shen will be working on the project Viral Ecologies: technological hypnotism and the zombie ants. The project works with algorithmic archeology mediated by an organic decomposition, a parasitical fungus transmitting a bug in the computer. A glitch presence infecting an image, affecting the system. There is no benevolence, there is no malice. Just pixel clusters drifting and deteriorating, transforming the host into one of us.
In 2013, Kuai Shen was awarded the Edith-Russ-Haus Medienkunstpreis, he received an honorary mention in hybrid art at the Prix Ars Electronica and recently he obtained the Cynetart 2014 Förderpreis der Sächsischen Kunstministerin with “Playing with ants & other insects”.
