Supercollider is pleased to announce Detail, a solo exhibition by Lee Machell, as the next exhibition in the 2013 programme. Detail serves up an act of playful dissent within the gallery space at Supercollider’s Cookson Street site. The gallery, stripped back to its most austere, will play host to Matches # 5 (2013), a continuation of Machell’s ongoing series of site-specific responses to, and interventions in, individual gallery spaces. Matches # 5 (2013) utilises cheap, readily available matches that, once burned, create an impermanent line, a record of ignitions which cuts across the surfaces of walls at Supercollider. This anarchic act results in an ephemeral vestige within the gallery, interrupting the solidity of structure and the crispness of the white surfaces of the gallery space. Detail is typical of Machell’s output, employing commonplace objects within a practice that incorporates sculpture, installation and drawing – in the instance of Detail these avenues overlap. Banal materials, like matches, are the basis for Machell’s continued investigation through which the economy of construction is mirrored in the simplicity of its components. A typed interview with the artist will be made available following the opening of the exhibition.
