Over a year in the making, Smith's ambitious project is both an aesthetic and conceptual ‘re-visioning’ of energy. Throughout 2008, Smith made repeat visits to all of the 32 major power stations of England. After shooting hundreds of images, he eventually distilled over 600 film slides down to a stunning superlative series of 20 large format prints. Bold and luminescent, the imagery found within each print gives his work puissance, pathos and an unearthly atmosphere. Smith offers an affective portrayal of the mass energy that flows through England’s primary power plants. He examines the juncture between the familiar and the unknown by playing with light and reflection as a way of reassuring the viewer, and drawing them even further into the image.
