Bristol based artist Seamus Staunton has exhibited widely, both locally and nationally, and now brings ‘Low Tide’ to the intimate space of the Bath Spa University Gallery in keeping with objects randomly found by the coast. The elegant forms, in birch plywood, are beautifully executed using a riveted construction and must be seen in person for full effect and realise the impressive scale of the piece to be enjoyed. Low Tide is a carefully composed still life, a trio of related objects. All three are containers or vessels: bowl, pot and funnel fabricated in wood, stitched together with rivets. Even where their interior spaces are visually elusive they are fully finished and mirror the exterior. These forms have roots in both natural phenomena and the man-made world, their organic structure the product of a formal geometry allied to fabrication techniques that evoke industrial processes. They could suggest some undefined practical application. The gallery is delighted to welcome this inspiring and innovative contemporary artist.
