A remarkable digital display will turn live footage of a crowd into animated figures from the Salford artist’s canvases. The electronic artwork will be the centrepiece of a one-off festival marking the BBC and Salford University’s official arrival at MediaCityUK.The stunning work, which will be projected onto buildings at Salford Quays, is inspired by Lowry’s 1954 painting Piccadilly Gardens.Artists Alastair Eilbeck, James Bailey and Ben Blundell will use motion capture technology to turn the passers-by into characters from Lowry’s world. The artists, who received permission from the Lowry estate, developed special software which mapped people’s movement and replaced it with their own digital characters.
