Luke Smith
Artist-in-Residence at Digital Artist Residency
1st Sept – 30th Sept 2017

Luke Smith’s practice categorises the circulation of digital information as analogous to other natural developments, understanding emerging fields of artificial intelligence and, on a more primitive level, digital images as developing species, which exist within a transcendental cyberspace in opposition to the world of flesh and physicality. Art production already has the capacity to oscillate between these two spaces, through rotations amid information and materiality, virtual and real, physical work and digital documentation.
The digital residencies provide an online space for artists to develop works, ideas and practices. Digital Artist Residency is an online platform which provides space for digital artists to create and display new artwork. The initiative aims to provide support for artwork created using digital processes, exploring the boundaries of art and technology.
For DAR, Smith presents Kebab Rotations (Evolutionary Patterns). Rotating kebab meats are consumed in thin layers of meat, sliced and separated as a distinct entity, but a digital image does not lose any greasy flesh when consumed but rather evolves its capacity to evolve and steps closer to transcending its own flat state. Conceivably, through intensifying this oscillation we will begin to recognise evolutionary patterns of survival, adaption and extinction, utilising the DAR residency page as an interim ecosystem / kebab house.
