One of Poland’s leading artists is to open a new exhibition of his work at the University of Suffolk’s Waterfront Gallery in Ipswich.
Professor Maciej Świeszewski is Dean of the Faculty of Painting and Graphics at The Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts and his work has been exhibited as far afield as Warsaw, Düsseldorf, Odessa, Brussels, Chicago and The China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. His new solo exhibition will open at The Waterfront Gallery, Ipswich, on Tuesday 5th March.
A one-time personal friend of the novelist Günter Grass, Maciej will be visiting Ipswich in person at the beginning of March to meet students, staff and members of the public at the opening of his exhibition, where he will also talk about his work and influences.
The invitation to visit and exhibit in Ipswich came about during a trip to Hangzhou in China in 2017 when he was taking part in an international symposium on painting. It was here he met fellow artist Robert Priseman who is a Visiting Professor at the University of Suffolk. Robert says: “When we met I immediately felt an affinity of Maciej and his work, and sensed if we could persuade him to visit our region it would be a very exciting outcome”. Robert, who is an internationally recognised artist himself, continues: “Maciej’s painting and drawing is based on his own geography and personal history, being a child of Post-War Europe growing up in Poland, which played home to some of the most extreme Nazi death camps during the second world war, such as Auschwitz, Majdanek and Treblinka. It is this dramatic history he draws upon.”
Professor Maciej Świeszewski will discuss how his drawings and paintings are made with Dr. Roman Nieczyporowski in the University of Suffolk lecture theatre on Tuesday 5th March from 18.30 – 19.30. In this talk he will explore how artists such as Otto Dix, Zoran Mušič, Alfred Kubin, Jacek Malczewski and Bronisław Linke influence his work and how they share a common desire to depict conditions of human suffering, which for Maciej is underpinned by the theory of the collective unconscious first advanced by Carl Jung in 1916.
