This month artist and Blue Monkey member Anne Barrell will lead another of our Maker Date events with an emphasis on socialising while making and doing. The event will provide an opportunity for us all to enjoy the company of like-minded people, accompanied by drinks, nibbles and arty chat alongside a low-tech clay making activity in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. No previous experience of working with clay is necessary and the evening is intended as an opportunity for artists to work alongside each other trying out techniques that may be unfamiliar to them.
During the course of the evening, Anne will run two individual sessions, each an hour long, to make sure everyone has the opportunity to make something. There will be time in between and after the sessions for drinks, nibbles and chat. The sessions will involve using a simple slab building technique to make your own unique mug (or any other cylindrical form) with relief and hand drawn decoration on smooth red terracotta clay. Anne will then fire and dip the mugs for you with a semi opaque white glaze that will emphasize the surface patterns.

Anne Barrell is interested in the history of the medium of ceramics which is linked to our industrial heritage and to our domestic lives. She is inspired by all things to do with the sea and shipping and our British maritime heritage, as well as by modern British artists and these influences are apparent in her unique handmade and hand-painted pieces.
Anne attended art classes in New York before returning to Britain to do a degree at Chelsea College of Art and Design. She then had a studio at Cockpit Arts in Holborn, London before moving to Eastbourne in 2004. She has exhibited at various shows in London and around England, and work has been commissioned to sell at The Jerwood Gallery, Emma Mason British Prints, Towner and Dulwich Picture Gallery amongst many others.
