Artist Mark Moynihan, a recent graduate of Gray’s School of Art, was commissioned by Grampian Hospitals Art Trust to paint nine members of staff from NHS Grampian and a member of The Scottish Ambulance Service. Each of the subjects allowed Mark a unique insight into their individual roles by allowing him to photograph and interview them whilst at work. He has not set out to flatter but rather to portray each sitter in an honest, straightforward manner. In each painting the background is empty and all the attention is drawn to the subject – their hands, their face, their clothing. We are indebted to the sitters for their generosity and patience in realising this project, and acknowledge that this exhibition represents only a small cross-section of the many individuals who each have an important role to play within healthcare in the North East. The portraits will now stay in ARI as part of the permanent collection of GHAT. They will be installed in the hospital for future generations.
