Mission Gallery is pleased to host ‘Marking Space’ which has been organised with the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Centre (CIRIC). Since 2005, CIRIC has worked on more than 130 creative research projects and provided tailor-made advice and guidance to over 275 of its members working across the creative sector in Wales. These creative practitioners represent disciplines as wide reaching as video, fine and applied art, architecture, photography and graphics. Each member has benefited from CIRIC’s unique support package, which includes access to the latest digital technologies: laser cutting and etching, digital printing and video editing.Artists and designers from many disciplines have explored sometimes very different interpretations of what it means to ‘mark space’. These explorations have been literal, metaphoric and metaphysical. Whilst some exhibitors have considered issues of gendered space, belonging and displacement, others have interrogated the meaning of virtual and physical space: how we occupy space and how we move through it. They all reveal the ‘marking’ of space to be both complex and fascinating: as infinitely recreated, simultaneously confining and boundless and, ultimately, challenging.
