In his second solo show, Matthew Murphy presents a new series of oil paintings and watercolours. His work displays a characteristic gallows humour coupled with a dark sense of mischief in narrative. His hallucinatory compositions depict impossibly strange or bug eyed anthropomorphic figures and mix a cartoonish style with often morose or annilhalistic overtones (his paintings bear titles such as Drinking to forget that my Body is in Athens and my Head in London, and Insomnia) His watercolours, painted intuitively in loose pastel washes, reflect the concerns of his work on canvas.
