Martin Westwood , Billy Childish, Gee Vaucher, Rita Soromenho, Chin Keeler & Emma Tornero, Angus Kerr, … A host of local artists and invited guests begin the 2009 N16 Fringe Festival at Praxis Gallery, a cooperatively run art space. In the 17th century, Stoke Newington became a refuge for political and religious dissenters. Banished from the confines of the rule bound City of London, ranters and pamphleteers could write and speak their minds in the liberal atmosphere of what was to become N16. Since then, free thinkers, political activists and creative’s working outside of the cultural mainstream have been drawn to the area. The 2009 N16 Fringe celebrates the spirit of creativity and free-thinking that is still a defining character of this ideological and cultural stronghold once famed for its cheap rent, kebabs, all night drinking dens and original creativity. Running for four days and nights from Thursday 20th August to Sunday 23rd August the N16 Fringe takes place in galleries, pubs, clubs, homes, warehouses, cafes and the street. The festival encompasses a huge perspective of music, poetry, art and performance from both established and up and coming artists based in Stoke Newington and Hackney, enhanced by an array of special guests. All but two of the many events are free admission. The N16 Fringe is a last bastion of Bohemia in a rapidly gentrifying north London.
