Natural Selection: an Exhibition of Bird and Botanical paintings. Anna Dickerson and Sandra Fernandez use the common place and exotic to present an exciting exhibition of new paintings.
Anna paints common garden birds. Surprising colours – bold pinks, yellows, vibrant blues and orange – are overlaid by greys, whites, blacks and gold to give a prevalence of calm. The soap operas of the bird table unfold, condensed into these jewel-like paintings.
Sandra’s detailed floral watercolours show the intensity of nature’s intrinsic beauty. The form and architectural qualities of the flowers have a very powerful presence. In Natural Selection Sandra has shifted from demure flowers to extravagant divas, Strelitzia -known as the bird of paradise- and Protea…the punk world of plants!
Anna and Sandra worked fifteen years apart at London Zoo as Artist in Residence and free-lance artist respectively. The townies moved to Kent, where they met exhibiting at the Cranbrook Art Show in 2013. Since then they have sketched together and discovered an affinity between their artwork. Anna studied at Glasgow School of Art and RISD and has work in private collections worldwide and public collections, including the United Nations in Rome. Sandra studied at Harrow College of Art and The Royal College of Art and has exhibited widely. Sandra won the prestigious Hugh Dunn Award and was commissioned to create a series of botanical paintings for the famous Chelsea Flower Show.
