At the start of Lockdown a group of 10 students from the MFA course at Goldsmiths started meeting once a week on Zoom. This online chat service felt as far away from oil- on-linen as one could get, but a contagious investigation into the persistence and possibilities of painting became a network of reborn production and critical thought.
This shared obsession became the catalyst to their meeting weekly online where they discussed the times they found themselves in and the relevance, or not, of their preoccupation with pushing around pigment. As the world outside their studios became increasingly alien, so the propriety of paint, as a tool adequate to such times, seemed harder to defend.
At a time of such accelerated digitisation the familiar refrain, why painting, why now, never seemed so relevant.
In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, they continue to paint.
