The second Plymouth Art Weekender will be taking place on the 23/24/25 of September 2016, organised by Visual Arts Plymouth. The event will be showcasing contemporary art across the city by local, national and international artists.
The Ocean Studios lineup for the weekender celebrates our first Birthday and our growing community of artists. Here are our first event annoucnements…
JOCK MOONEY, WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?
23/24/25 September
In ‘Who Are You & What Do You Want’, Jock Mooney presents a vivid and playful medley of work. Comprising mainly of sculpture, the show also contains drawings, fabric design, and audio work.
Inspired in part by the vibrant culture of Mexico, circular pom-poms are woven throughout the colourful exhibition and invite the viewer in. Some function as a cushion for Mooney’s sculptures, which appear initially as a pretty array of appetising cakes and biscuits. Come a little closer, however, and discover beautifully grotesque imagery – from the guillotined head of Marie Antoinette to Janus cats, named after the Roman God who could see both past and future. Similarly, Mooney’s drawings teem with imagery which, with their landscapes of isolation and loss, are unapologetically personal. With incredible detail and playful contrasts, ‘Who Are You & What Do You Want’ promises to be an exhibition you will not want to miss.
OPEN STUDIOS

Curious to see artists at work within their studios? Across this year’s Art Weekender the residents of Ocean Studios will be opening their doors to the public, giving you the chance to do just that. Open Studios is the perfect event to meet artists, discuss and peruse their work with them, and even buy or commission unique pieces. With residents working in mediums from photography to painting, jewellery to glass-work, there will be a wide variety on offer. Based in the Grade-I listed Factory Cooperage, Open Studios is an opportunity not only to see local and diverse contemporary art in the making but also to explore the building in all its glory.
CREATIVE COLLECTIVE MARKET
Sunday 25 September – Art & Designer Maker Market
Following the success of the last two markets, Ocean Studios will be hosting its third during the Art Weekender. From prints and fabrics to jewellery and embroidery, the event offers a variety of local contemporary work for you to both browse and buy. A refreshing alternative to everyday mass retail, the Creative Collective Market instead supports independent and locally-produced bespoke items. With the stalls being run by the artists themselves, you’ll have the opportunity to find out more about their work on a personal level. Hosted in Ocean’s open Project Space, the market will be taking place on the final day of the Art Weekender and will certainly be a truly unique shopping experience.
MARTYN CROSS, I LIKE IT AND SO I DO IT
23/24/25 September
Hosting his own open studios across the weekend, Martyn Cross will be taking up temporary residence at Ocean Studios. Channeling Bernard Skuse’s mantra – ‘I like it and so I do it’ – the Bristol-based artist will be working across a wide range of practices for the public to see. With an intense methodical style, Cross transforms idealistic images to suggest something more uncanny or troubling which hints to the mythical and visionary. Though artistic skill is often seen in final outcome, here Cross gives the opportunity to see it in the process, in the development of the work itself.
EUROPEAN OUTREACH PROJECT:
Light & Dark – A journey into analogue, black and white, 35mm photography & processing.
In today’s digital age, everyone can take photographs with the click of a button. With smartphones and photo-filters, creating and editing an image can become much more immediate. Though wonderful in many ways, this can cause the process and craft of photography to be somewhat forgotten – perhaps, today, we take photography for granted. The European Outreach Project aims to address this by providing an experience for five youngsters. For one month, they will produce images through using manually controlled, black and white, 35mm film cameras. They will be responsible for creating their own assignments, shooting their subjects, evaluating their work, and processing their photographs in the darkroom. The project co-ordinators provide the tools, facilities, training, and support to assist them. The five youngsters will also partake in community activities and learn life-skills, from supporting the local fisherman and nearby events to tending to the house and cooking.
FAMILY DAYS
Get the whole house involved in our family-day events! Come to Ocean Studios and make artwork in response to our main exhibition, ‘Who Are You and What Do You Want?’. Much of the work on show involves circular pom-poms, which form a serpent-like trail through the exhibition. Taking inspiration from this, the artwork made during the event will then be lead through a procession around the Royal William Yard – a day with which everyone can get involved.
