Sherrie-Leigh Jones is an Artist and Printmaker based in Brighton, East Sussex. She creates imagined landscape prints inspired by nature and natural phenomena and the romantic sublime. Inspiration is also drawn from Japanese prints and concepts including the woodblock printmaking movement known as Shin-hanga and Sansuiga; paintings that depict an idealised landscape using the forms of mountains, rivers, clouds and mist.

The landscape prints presented in Of Mountains and Light embody the changing seasons and times of day with their shifts in ambient light and subdued colours, from moonlight to sunlight, in her Komorebi series – the Japanese word used to describe being amongst the trees with sunlight shining through.

Referencing a trip to Norway and the earthy tones and puddle shapes in the natural elements of the Norwegian fjords and mountains, negative space has been used to embody the calmness experienced being outdoors in nature and a space to pause, which also emanates the Japanese concept, ‘ma’ – negative space is seen as a positive, creating serenity and balance. This concept extends from zen gardens, the space between objects as light and shadows, to sound and silence. Using graphite powder and pigments to screenprint with continues this interplay of subdued colour, light and quietness often evoked with transitory changes in seasons and times of day.

The transformations of air and light year round, from the lengthening shadows and deepening colours of autumn, through the metallic glints of winter, to the hopeful dawning of spring.

Jones exhibits in the UK and internationally, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2021). Work is held in Jeremy Cooper’s Collection and private collections in the UK, Europe, USA and Taiwan. Her work has received support and recognition from a-n The Artists Information Company and Arts Council England (2020), Woolwich Contemporary Editions (2018), Print Futures Award (2015) and she has been commissioned by fashion label, To Be Adored (tba), which featured on the front cover of Grazia China (2013).
