Textile designer maker Ekta Kaul premiers her new collection of textile accessories at Origin, which is a key annual event in the design and craft calendar. Ekta’s collection draws inspiration from handwritten letters, re-interpreting their two dimensional surfaces into tactile, three dimensional surfaces. Vibrant saturated colours, an inheritance of Ekta’s Indian background, underpin these contemporary designs. The collection includes bedspreads and throws in sumptuous silks, intricately embroidered with a handwriting-like stitching technique. Textured cushions are made using a wide array of techniques including embroidery, needle punching and printing. Scarves and textile jewellery in bright silks add depth and dimension to the collection. Ekta is a recipient of the Crafts Council’s prestigious business set up award ‘Next Move’, which is a national scheme set up to support talented designer makers to develop their businesses. Ekta is also a recipient of the Arts Council’s Grant for the Arts. She is currently based at Bath Spa University as the designer-in-residence. www.ektakaul.com
