Origination is an ongoing collaboration between sisters and artists Katy and Rebecca Beinart. The project explores and reframes narratives of family history, in an attempt to understand the construction of identity and its connection to place. Over the past two years, the sisters have created varied artworks that weave together factual research and mythologies, to investigate themes of migration, memory and cultural adaptation. This summer, Origination comes to Brixton, with a residency at Brixton Market, and an exhibition at 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning. The exhibition will feature new works made in response to a residency in Brixton Market, drawing on Brixton’s rich history of migration. Also on show will be installation, film and photographic works made during the artist’s 2010 residency in Cape Town, South Africa. This project is supported by funding from the Arts Council England, 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning and by the UCL Public Engagement Unit under the Beacons for Public Engagement programme – funded by the UK funding councils, Research Councils UK and the Wellcome Trust.
