Degrees of Freedom artist group invite six artists working at the intersection of language, landscape and materiality to catalyse spaces at the Espacio Gallery as sites for experimentation and real time exchange.
The artists are: Jane Glennie, Robert Good, Tom Hackett, Belinda Mitchell, Eileen White and Julian Woodcock.
Jane Glennie’s “flicker films” use a blizzard of still photographs, soundscapes and text to create immersive environments, often painterly and abstract, saturated with poetry.
Robert Good explores how information works in the virtual world, as texts sourced from the internet are transcribed physically or digitally into the real world and take on personal meanings.
Tom Hackett & Julian Woodcock take collected speech fragments pertaining to personal or societal regrets into the public space using choreographed sound, text and graphics; often with a touch of humour and with surreal results.
Belinda Mitchell explores interiors of historic spaces, transcribing them through LIDAR scans, drawings and choreographic scores to provide a route for subjective experiences and emotions as well as to their material properties.
Eileen White uses alternative photographic processes to capture historic landmarks, and uses the disconnects between sites of capture, production and reception to enable new meanings to be produced.
