The artists write: FRANKLYN BECKFORD: “The use of flowers with its ever changing cycle of colour and structural changes serves as the perfect visual metaphor for me to express my thoughts and views associated with people, ceremonies and cultures. The layering and mixed media approach to my work, enhances the intertwining of these themes, and also reflects my long history of having used a number of different artistic media such as sculpture, printing, painting and theatre design.” JULIE SCARR: “In this work I have looked at the notion of nest building and also at the time of life known as ‘empty nest syndrome’. As I and many of my friends embark on this new phase of life without children at home, new possibilities for living and working arise. This in turn presents new challenges and is a slightly uncomfortable, unfamiliar and yet liberating experience. I have tried to convey this sense of unease and liberation by re-making old work. I have cut up and re-assembled old paintings, some of which go back twenty-five years. They are now unrecognizable as the figurative images they once were and now exist in a purely abstract state. I like the idea that the old images are held within, still there, almost secretly but something new has been made with them.”
