First major solo show of contemporary art by Mark Elliott Smith. Preview 10 August 2012 6.30-9.30pm, continues 10.00 am – 4.00 pm 11-27 August with another opportunity to meet the artist 10.00am – 4.00pm 18 August. Large scale paintings prompted by a collection of childhood drawings show a playful approach to the monsters of the imagination. By dramatically increasing the scale of the original small felt tip drawings, and representing chance actions in a controlled, deliberate and highly finished way, the process of painting reveals and amplifies previously hidden information, both visual and psychological. The result is an interaction between the abstract and the surreal. The combination of spontaneity and control, chaos and precision extracts and re-presents the lost and found on an epic scale.
