‘Crook Street Collective’, Donna Dowd, Charlotte Easterbrook, Marguerite Heywood, Marc Heaton, Karen Markham, Esther Pilling, Steph Shipley, Alison Timmins and Gerard Young, a group of Fine Art students and recent graduates from the University of Bolton present Palimpsest: apparent beneath the surface an exhibition of contemporary artwork inspired by their own journey of learning using a variety of media and processes. The classical reference to the re-use of manuscripts where original texts have been erased or concealed by subsequent layers which in turn preserve traces of what lies beneath is apt for interpretation; this “fluid relationship” asserts and invites new or re-invented work with opportunities for exploring contemporary issues such as recession and the environment, as well as the nuances of nostalgia, memory and the poetics of space. Exhibiting artist and neo: associate Steph Shipley says: “Our work continues to be stimulated and invigorated by new knowledge and understanding; the theme excites and challenges perceptions of deconstruction, erasure and preservation.” The exhibition opens on Thursday 8August with a Preview on Saturday 10August from 2.00 – 4.00 pm. The exhibition then runs until 25August when the gallery is open Thursday –Saturday, 11.00 am to 5.00 pm.
