“Passing Through Two Doors at Once” – An Exhibition by Luisa-Maria MacCormack

London, August 24*, 2023 – Luisa-Maria MacCormack’s exhibition “Passing Through Two
Doors at Once”: is an immersive journey that invites you to trace the deeply entangled
connections between humans, nature, and the world beyond. This captivating showcase
features a blend of paintings, ceramics, sculpture, and sound work, creating a thought-
provoking display of new works.

“Our minds, the minds of the nonhuman, the intricate ever shifting patterns of thought,
millions of endless webs, endless changes in the pressure, the expanse. A tree doesn’t think
like a snake, or a stone, or an amoeba, or like us. The word; begins to crumble and
fracture under the weight of itself, under all of these different beings. One mind is never
going to be enough for me. Never should be enough.”

This Quote from Rebecca Tamas’s “Essays on the Strange and Nonhuman” highlights Luisa-
Maria MacCormack’s ongoing journey in materialising the existing connections between the
embodied experiences of humans, animals, plants, and souls – she asks: What is it to pass-
through-two-doors-at-once? To experience the sensation of a body passing through two
places at the same time?

The exhibition: “Passing Through Two Doors at Once" draws from mycologist Merlin
Sheldrake’s work, capturing the essence of MacCormack's artistry as it conveys the
sensation of traversing multiple dimensions simultaneously. Rooted in Quantum biology’s
principles of Quantum Tunneling and Quantum Entanglement, her work mirrors the intricate
connections within the natural world.

MacCormack’s research-driven artwork delve into prescient themes of Feminist Critical
Theory, ecology, magic, and religion. Through mediums like painting, drawing, sculpture and
sound, she creates a tapestry-woven connection linking collective memory with a personal
imagined mythic realm. Blurring the lines between the non-human and more-than-human,
her art sparks contemplation on interconnectedness.

Influenced by luminaries like Rosa Braidotti, Karen Barard, Donna Haraway, Jane Bennett
and Rebecca Tamas, MacCormack’s art contemplates religious experience and the sublime
within an alternate reality where humanity has taken a different course. These thought-
provoking pieces challenge us to envision a sacred art that embraces a world beyond
humans.

Set within the historic Nunhead Cemetery Chapel, the exhibition takes on new meaning.
“Passing Through Two Doors at Once” contextualised in this unique venue, creates the
contemplative atmosphere inspiring reflection on life temporality, mortality, and our evolving
relationship with death and mourning.
