John Berger states: “The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.”We are delighted to announce the first joint show of Glasgow based artists Teresa Brown and Philip Gurrey at SWG3, Glasgow. In a series of oil paintings shown under the title ‘The Action of Looking’ Brown and Gurrey focus upon a visual transformation of language, perception and understanding. Brown concentrates on the bridge between the unconscious and the real, by forming visceral abstract images through her use of spontaneous mark making. These often quite translucent works hold the viewer with an inner luminosity, reminiscent of Turner, in a physical dialogue between themselves and the image, reality and their own unconscious. ‘In About Looking’ Berger explores our role as observers to reveal new layers of meaning in what we see. This underpins what Brown aims to do with the work – To look, to see, to consciously forget what we see and act in the moment spontaneously to the surface and the materials we are working with. Gurrey focuses on the theme of identity through notions of introspection, concentrating on its inherent link to the subconscious to reveal/ask questions surrounding the human condition. His misshapen, often mesmerising portraits glower out at the viewer in a naked encounter, staring, questioning, asking and reflecting.
