phyle n. clan, tribe, people ˈfī-(ˌ)lē
[from Greek φύω (phyō), to produce, germinate, grow.
Derived from ancient Greek φύεσθαι, to descend, to originate]
Join us to celebrate the launch of a solo exhibition of new work by Leontios Toumpouris at Custom Lane, Edinburgh, organised by the Cyprus High Commission in London.
This exhibition, curated by Eoin Dara, comprises a series of wall-based works in ceramic and leather, moulding and manipulating these materials to physically and linguistically hint at new bodies coming forth into our world. These bodies – an unknowable, primordial tribe – have been collectively generated and transformed through research into ancient alchemical processes and ideologies, offering up new possibilities for these age-old materials and amplifying previously unheard voices within raw matter.
