Corinne Charton – Pieced together
4-21 November,
Opening Night 4 November 2021, 6-9pm
Collage, in one form or another has been a part of my Art practice for a very long time…. probably for ever.
From how I in my Video Practice stick together frames in different sequences from how the original footage was meant to be, to creating new visual narratives in my painting practice, derived from a multitude of personal and found photos, images from magazines or found online.
Although I gather my materials from a multitude of sources, I am not interested in any kind of double reading of each element, I am not adhering to Picasso’s statement about trying “…to get rid of ‘trompe l’oeil’ to find a ‘trompe l’espirit’… If a piece of newspaper can become a bottle, that gives us something to think about in connection with both newspapers and bottles, too.”
It is the combination of the real and metaphorical gluing together of each component; Letraset ruboffs, cut-outs from magazines etc. that I am interested in. I often stick these on top of very old book pages that I have added ink and pastels, melted either through a heating source or diluted in alcohol thus somehow slightly contradicting myself with regards to not wanting to find a ‘trompe l’espirit’
Gallery opening hours: Thursday-Sunday, 12-6pm
