“Receiving The SMART Gallery New Art Look to the North Award in 2014 was a huge honour and has provided me with great inspiration to create new works. This past year, since graduating from Gray’s School of Art, has been challenging and exciting, allowing me to find out more about myself and my practice. The whole experience has been a pilgrimage for me, finding out how to balance day to day life and carry on making art, it has been extremely rewarding and also very challenging.”
Caitlin Hynes
During her year since graduating Caitlin has also been working across many mediums, including drawing, after being invited to show work in the Royal Scottish Academy’s Scottish Drawing exhibition, alongside a selection of Scottish artists who constantly inspire her. During Caitlin’s degree show she was also selected to be part of the RSA New Contemporaries exhibition, in which she exhibited two large tapestries along side a trinket stall. At the RSA New Contemporaries exhibition Caitlin was selected for the Fleming Collection’s New Scottish Artists 2015 exhibition, currently on show at the Fleming Gallery in London, as well as being awarded the Carnegie Traveling Scholarship for Painting.
The New Art Look to the North Award was set up by SMART in 2012 to support emerging graduates coming out of art school by providing them with a solo exhibition at The SMART Gallery and financial support towards material costs.
SMART selected a final year student each year from Gray’s School of Art and worked with them to present their first major solo exhibition at the gallery. Park Brown International presented a prize of £500 to the awardee, helping towards material costs as well as further sponsorship of the exhibition.
