Playing with Fire is a major survey of contemporary UK enamelling. The medium is more specialised today though it uses relatively simple processes and has roots in industrial metalwork. The basic technique involves kiln-firing ground coloured glass onto a base such as gold, silver, copper, steel or aluminium. But from this come other processes which produce a vast range of objects and art forms, from the tiny and exquisite to large scale work for walls. Central this exhibition is the concept of ‘play’ where each artist will extend traditional methods to make new forms. To add fuel to the fire, a major prize will be given to the most innovative work. This collaborative show has been developed along with the University of the West of England and the British Society of Enamellers and will tour across the UK in 2009/10. Artists include: Kathryn Adamson, Stephen Bottomley, Helen Carnac, Beate Gegenwart, Grace Girvan, Rachel Gogerley, John Grayson, Joan Mackarell, Jilly Morris, Zsuzsi Morrison, Liana Pattihis, Kimberley Scott, Ed Silverton, Jessica Turrell, Tamar de vries Winter.
