Aether & Hemera’s ‘Pollinators’ is an interactive sound installation part of the ‘The Tree, The Caterpillar & The Butterfly’ project.
Ten interactive birdhouses hanging from electric cable’s tree branches are ‘nesting’ different birds and visitors are invited to trigger their calls using their mobile phone or tablet.
The wooden birdhouses incorporate speakers and amplifiers; the control system includes an Arduino, a Rasperry Pi as DHCP and Web server, a wireless access point and bespoke software to allow real-time interactions.
From birds to bees, pollinators are critically important for our ecosystem, however their populations is in continue decline; this installation is a reminder that nature needs our help. According to the State of the UK’s Birds Report, the UK has lost 44 million breeding birds since the late 1960s.
Without our help, their populations will continue to decline and the exhibition invites people to take practical actions, such as providing habitat for pollinators.
‘The Tree, The Caterpillar & The Butterfly’ project is part of ‘Generation’ touring exhibition, aiming at bringing new family audiences into 4 contemporary art galleries in the North of England.
Lucy Jenkins, Art Exhibitions Curator at the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery said, ‘The artists Aether & Hemera have done a brilliant job of creating a new exhibition that will capture the imagination of families as well as being outstanding artistically.’
The exhibition is on display at the DLI Museum in Durham until 10 January 2016 and will then be shown at Central Art Gallery, Ashton-under-Lyne.
The Generation Tour will continue in Towneley Hall in Burnley and Central Art Gallery as well as and in Berwick Gymnasium Gallery next year.
