In this latest body of work, Smith has intensified the application of gloss and enamel paint, resulting in exaggerated bulges, with taught distended outer skin containing unseen liquid beneath. These sculptural protrusions may look fragile but are usually strong, encasing their innards in a solid impermeable outer shell. However, on occasion the structures will fail in their making, allowing access and full vision to what’s inside. These more abstract paintings are shown alongside her continuing creature series in which the energised subjects are set against a flat solid impenetrable ground, enabling scrutiny of these expressive figures, with no distractions.
