If anyone can make traditional, highly skilled, virtuoso drawings into robust, sexy, contemporary art, it is Egyptian artist Nazir Tanbouli. Nazir Tanbouli's drawings and paintings are social, critical stories that delve into the quotidian and reveal, in equal measure, the beauties and nightmares therein. Sharing an outlook and sensibility with artists such as Goya and Hogarth, Tanbouli's works are subversive, yet subjective conversations. They hold within them the elements of confessional, but it's not clear who is doing the confessing and who the listening – the artist or his audience?Nazir Tanbouli was born in 1971. He lived, studied and worked in Alexandria Egypt, where he was acclaimed as one of the foremost of the "young Egyptian Artists", recognised for his astonishing facility with drawing, almost reinventing the medium. Since 2002 he has been based in the UK, alongside periods spent in Berlin and Italy, where he focuses on drawing and painting-based projects, exhibiting both in the UK and internationally. He has been the recipient of various prizes and awards, as well as mural commissions and collaborative projects with other art forms. PRIVATE NIGHTMARES is Tanbouli's first solo London show.
