Working with hair, skin and dust as primary materials, Beverley Duckworth reveals and reconfigures the discarded to create works that are beautiful, unsettling and occasionally darkly humorous.
‘Raising Dust’ raises questions about what we choose to value and links our aversion to dirt and bodily matter to our precarious relationship with the natural world.
The exhibition responds to cultural, social and gendered expectations of the body, taking a tender look at the shame attached to female body hair. Issues explored include how skin conditions and temporal life marks like scars and stretchmarks are deliberately censored from images, undermining the beauty of difference.
