‘Re–Collect’ reunites two artists in an exhibition of 100+ pieces of silver sculpture, drawing, painting and etching. Meryl Ainslie and Susan Preston crossed paths in India, and here they co-inhabit the gallery space with certain individuality and a shared experience. Meryl Ainslie’s 100+ pieces of cast silver sculpture, sketchbook drawings and etchings are a legacy to this artists journeys and experiences from near and far: grass seeds from her home farm; stitching on a broom, Thailand; door rivets from a palace, India; an electric circuit from a derelict building, Swindon. The casts are displayed as a contemporary archaeology with the catalogued precision of Victorian entomological collections. In Susan Preston’s paintings and works on paper the paint and graphite are layered to a shimmering surface. Abstract forms loom in subtle hues, the glowing colours of India are glimpsed through a closed shutter or the holed hull of a beached boat. They are ‘resonant of images in my head, memories…’
