It is significant that ‘2021’ has been added to the title of the CAS associates’ exhibition, for this has been a year unlike any other. Physical connection for many has transmuted into digital connection, bodily isolation has been coupled with a multiplicity of online interactions, from attending village hall meetings on Zoom, to teaching our children, to the last emotional exchanges with a loved one via the backlit glow of the iPad screen. Humans are relational beings. When we relate with each other, with material, with matter, with things, meaning is set in motion.
The CAS associate programme brings artists of differing mediums, activities and approaches together in conversation and collaboration. Under the auspices of the CAS chapel space, known in the 1800’s as a Chapel of Dissent, that conversation seeks to explore the alternative voice, the dissenting notion, to encourage a new observation of the world and each other.
At times the work is fragmented, surreal and disruptive, at others lyrical, reflective and sublime. Such juxtaposition of discord and harmony is not nullifying, but generative, a natural reflection of where we find ourselves. From the expectant bird boxes hung in the trees outside, to an online digital world within the CAS exhibiting space, the CAS associates’ exhibition reaches out and invites interaction. As psychologist Kenneth Gergen said, whose research the exhibition title draws on, ‘I’m connected; therefore I am’.
